"YOU KNOW ME" WICKED ALL STARS: ILL BLISS, YOBEMOH & MI-FLISS. HISTORY LESSONS.

Hip Hop in Nigeria cannot be mentioned without the sacrifices of the pioneers and the struggles they prevailed over without mentioning the likes of Paul Akhimie, then Sec Gen of the pioneering movement which birthed the coined phrase "Afro Hip Hop" under the aegis of the first true Hip hop Society in Nigeria called AFRO HIP HOP SOCIETY OF NIGERIA which was coordinated alongside Seyi Allen, renowned entertainment consultant/artist manager (husband to Azeezat COSON Executive Member). Established in 1999 as a cohesive front to emancipate the choking bureaucracy of creative impediments prevalent in Nigeria's electronic media to home grown hip hop. This among other projects led to the inspired creation of the WICKED ALL STARS PROJECT by Paul "Yobemoh" Akhimie & Michael "Mi-Fliss" Akhimie, an album project which was aimed at creating pure hip hop music featuring then seasoned promising underground rappers such as ILL BLISS & D-TIZZAR.

One of the project single titled "YOU KNOW ME" ft ILL BLISS, YOBEMOH & MI-FLISS won best Underground Hip Hop in the maiden edition of the first hip hop awards in Nigeria under the AFRO HIP HOP AWARDS event in 2001, which held at the NEW AFRICAN SHRINE. The track got massive rotation of the drive time-belt morning belt of Rhythm fm, Lagos & on Dr Flavor's Hip hop show on Eko fm, lagos, generating quiet a buzz in the burgeoning hip hop stratosphere in Lagos as at the time.
The rest as you know it is history. Check it out & relive a true moment in Nigeria's hip hop history as we present to you for the first time ever on the internet & cyberspace the matsered version of the track off the WICKED ALL STARS MIXTAPE. Hip Hop never had it better in Nigeria.

A SONG TO ALL THAT STAND FOR SOMETHING NOBLE (DEDICATED TO NELSON MANDELA).

In this present age when every Nigerian mainstream artiste dwell on creating that fly by night club hit, giving very little thought to churning out inspirational character building songs, a kindred of the Hip Hop genre delves into a soul stirring lyrical expose of the fighting spirit of humanity & the will to overcome trials prevalent in the world. Writing and producing a hip hop record drenched in soul, laced over laid back retro piano chords that makes one feel like one’s in a church service, but the street talk & occasional ‘french’ in the lyrics jar the senses back to the provocative message of the fickleness of modern society. The one with the message is none other than Yobemoh.
The song titled “Stand For Something” features Hulguz Cudler ace soul singer, belting out those sonorous hooks.
Yobemoh: “I recorded this song (Stand for Something) in 2010, but never felt like putting it out then, ‘cause it didn’t quite feel like the moment & it sounded so retro. I poured out my heart on this record and was going through the motions with what was happening in the world as at the time. I wanted it to impact on people, to make ‘em reflect on life”.
“With the passing of Nelson Madiba Mandela, I found myself drifting into that ‘mind melding’ trance as I witnessed a man’s infinitesimal selfless struggle impacting on all, in admirable deserving global proportions, just because he stood for something he believed in and pursued it in an assertive but yet humane manner”.
“And it hit me; the death of a man brings to an end, an era that championed ‘purity in struggle’.  I felt compelled to impress on the moment, hence the release of this record in his (Mandela) honor and also as my little contribution to encourage anyone out there going through some serious challenges, to tell ‘em that they aren’t alone”.
So the big question Yobemoh lives you pondering on after listening to this record is, ‘What do you stand for?’ Bear in mind your answer will have a life changing effect on the world, positive or negative history will tell.

YOBEMOH - HIP-HOP COMES HOME TO ROOST written by FELIX ABATTAN (renowned entertainment writer)

Like a drunk, his very breath stank hip-hop! An embodiment of the art in all its essence. A true-blue custodian of the culture and an ardent disciple of the movement. Sometimes it may be wise and expedient to exercise restraint when dealing with certain subjects in order to capture them in just the right and appropriate colours and hues. No matter how hard it is sometimes to find the right words, this here is a story that must be told. The story of Yobemoh, When Hip-hop Comes Home to Roost!
Back in ’87 when most youngsters his age are still struggling with their letters, young Yobemoh was messing with hip-hop, soaking up a halluva pile of information that ordinarily would have been a little sublime for the average mind, but then hip-hop has never been a pastime for the weak minded or unintelligent. He found himself imbibing much of the early hip-hop materials, songs of protest steep in the chronicles of the challenges of African- Ameriacan inner-city youths in America. He collected and listened to materials from early hip-hop groups and acts like De La Soul, The Roots, NWA, Grandmaster Caz, Furious Five and Ice T among others.
In time, he encountered literatures and also read auto-bios of great African- American human rights figures like Malcom X, Martin Luther King Jnr., Louis Frrakhan, Mohammed Alli and others. This brought a great insight to his young mind and a consciousness to his immediate environment, pitching him  among hip-hop heads like Solo Dee, Efe ‘’Freak’’ Omorogbe, Black Masqueradaz, Ayo Animashaun, King (Dee Weez), Osha, Dj Jimmy Jatt, Da Slug as well as Mode9, Sixfootplus, Rule Clean etc.
Having a singer for a mother helped sharpen his musical savvy which properly came to the fore when rap music began to gain and enjoy mainstream acceptance. Yobemoh went around as a duo called ‘’Zulu Tribes’’ between ’89-91 recording materials that were hailed as underground jewels which won for them respect, which was every MCs major pre-occupation back in the day. And as the artform gained more and more popularity, there arose a need to create institutions to promote the bourgeoning art-form. He, alongside other hip-hop heads organized the first Hip-hop awards dubbed Afro Hip-hop Awards and African Hip-hop Summit, a workshop on Hip-hop Culture. He also created “Gully” a Hip-hop cultural exchange that attracted participants from Brooklyn hip-hop scene among others and also Lyricist Lounge, a hip-hop get together which afforded rappers and hip-hop heads the opportunity to hook up, have fun and generally live out the culture.
Before long, he was compelled to ditch his recording career or better still, put it on hold in pursuit of the bigger picture when he designed Illific Solutions, a Company that provided entertainment marketing solutions in a fast expanding industry. Illific solutions at various times guided the careers of a wide range of acts like Lord of Ajasa, Mi-Fliss, Bigiano, Blackface, Roof Top Mcs, Malam Spicy, Oso Sensci, Jonah D’ Monarch, K-Soul, Attitude just to  mention a few, As well as inspiring the media celebrated Plantashun Boiz re-union of 2007.
After spending the last 20years or more cross-crossing the broad spectrum of the entertainment industry and leaving his mark in basically every sector, from recording, packaging, promotion, marketing and distribution  to events, the artiste is ready to perch and eventually land. For a very long time, his artistic instinct which lay dormant while he worked and contributed his bit to the vibrancy the industry presently enjoys, now the artiste is ready to resume and take his place as a recording artiste. To this end, the artiste has commenced a recording onslaught with the release of his self titled EP “Yobemoh”. Sometime in March 2012, he released his very first official single. “Original Fine People” which has been winning rave reviews and garnering airplay on both TV and Radio. He followed up with “Wait There” featuring Afro-pop sensation. Isolate as well as collaborate on hot materials with acts like Lord of Ajasa, Mallam Spicy, Mimmy Tea among others.

There is a palpable excitement in the hip-hop community as heads wait with bated breath for about the most anticipated album thus far. As a talent manager, he has quided some of the brightest talents to stardom, as an enterpreneur, he has provided some of the most brilliant marketing solution and largescale music merchandizing the industry has seen and as a showbiz impressario, he has singlehandedly or with his friends put together some of the memerable and key events that has shaped the music industry with particular bias for hip-hop.
Fighting to position the industry has been a worthwhile venture, now is the time to reap the fruit of his labour as he prepares to put out his very first and official body of work, perhaps to assuage the yearning of his legion of fans who have patiently waited a lifetime to see their favourite MC on vinyl. And as we brace up to receive him as he takes his place in the exaulted hip-hop firmament, we can’t help but imagine what it would feel like to have Yobemoh, one of hip-hop finest, come home to roost!

WHEN THE COWBELL CLANGS by WADE JOHNSON

Hip Hop in Nigeria has witnessed an unprecedented growth in  the past 10 years, it has also become the major social & urban lifestyle influencer. This paradigm shift can be attributed to the efforts of notable individuals in Nigeria, one of such persons is Yobemoh. Yobemoh is a pioneer Hip Hop icon, performer, talent manager, ardent lover and propagator of Hip Hop culture in Africa and the world over. Yobemoh shares an interesting embodiment,as the alter ego persona of the founder of ILLIFIC, Mr Paul Akhimie one of Nigeria’s foremost talent management and entertainment agency, with a repertoire profile of acts.
Yobemoh’s biography reads like an epic flick, but this creative sapient is just getting warm. Recently releasing his first official debut singles titled “Original Fine People” & “Let Me Love You” which received appreciable rotation on key radio stations. The lead single “Original Fine People” moved up the ranks of the daily charts on one of Nigeria’s foremost urban-music radio station Rhythm 93.7 FM for 3weeks, rising to the Number#3 Spot on the ”Top Seven Jams @ Seven”.  The video of the song, which was directed by Uben, an internationally trained cinematographer, was well received on major music video channels and TV Stations across the nation. Yobemoh’s salted blend of Hip Hop exhibits a rarity in this part of our world blending diverse cultural influences both indigenous & global in outlook.
I asked him how he came about the name Yobemoh, and he said “Back in my teen years my peeps referred to me as a homeboy, that fella you could rely on; I wanted to keep it but it sounded so cliché as at the time, so I needed to make it sound fresh so I reversed the word ‘Homeboy’ and I came up with ‘Yobemoh’ and it stuck”.
When asked about his take on the Hip Hop scene of late he replies “I’m glad to see rappers making ends with their craft, but I’m very particular about creative diversity and this dudes just ain’t raising the bar and they burnt out already” he says.

Debuting his new single “Cowbell”, set to drop today (7th September 2012) is an attestation of that move in that direction. “I’m  dropping that nu feel south-bounce-drawl Hip Hop on this record, putting sexy out” he says, unveiling the official sleeve art for the single which features top video vixen/Playboy Playmate, Melissa Howe of The Howe Twins fame, as the cover model is breath taking to say the least. Asked how he hooked up with the playmate who has featured in videos with 50cent, Snoop Dog & reference with Tom Cruise amongst others, he said “Me ‘n  Mel being pals, she helped out on my first online video for my record ‘Birthday Suit’ bout a year ‘n a half ago, told her about this, she was like hell yeah baby, ride with it”.
“This record is set to propel me on a global mine field of opportunities, ni**a bound to blow up, feel me?!” he says laughing.
“We made this industry (Nigeria’s Hip Hop) viable, we set the parameters, now I’m set to rein things in as the apex regulator” he said.
In light of staying in touch with his fans his indie label imprint ILLIFIC MUSIC set up his social media website where his fans can reach him, on twitter : @yobemoh & facebook.com/yobemohofficial. “I love interacting with my fans and I want to be as ‘Real’ to them as possible, not some surreal-inaccessible ‘idol’” he says.
Asked if he’ll like to change anything if possible about the scene in Nigeria he responds. “Yeah , the lack of ingenuity and the myopic scope of their creative servings.  We’re in a cyber age, every rapper in Nigeria needs to step up their game ‘cause the world is our playing field and we’re accountable for whatever negative perception in terms of the quality of music we put out brings”.
Rappers, step your game up.
